The film depicts the life of Andre, a young rich farmer. Andre is educated, smart and strong. His wife Klute is gentle and tolerant. Together they bought a deserted farm and wanted to start a new life here. Their neighbor Perru is rude and uncooperative. Andre wants to work with Perru to repair the canal, but they always have conflicts. Perru also killed his hunting dog and even arranged the scene so that Andre could not accuse him of his crime. Andre thinks Perru is a complete rogue who is bent on revenge, and Klute always mediates the conflicts between her husband and his neighbors. As time goes by, "justice" becomes the most important thing in Andre's heart, but this "justice" only brings him loneliness.
