Podiyankulam, a remote village in southern Tamil Nadu, has a special tradition: whoever can jump from a cliff and chop a fish thrown from the other side into two halves will have the "Village Sword"; those who choose to accept the challenge but fail to chop the fish into two halves will be beheaded by the villagers. In 1997, a young man named Karnan took off into the air and became the owner of the sword. Podiyankulam and its neighboring village Melur have a long-standing feud. The villagers of the former are from a lower caste and have been oppressed for many years. The cause of the story started with a bus that did not want to pass through Podiyankulam. Under the political influence of the Melur villagers, the Podiyankulam village repeatedly petitioned to set up a bus station in the village, but the request was rejected. If the villagers want to go out, they have to wait at the bus station in Melur village, and they have been bullied and harassed by the Melur villagers for a long time while waiting for the bus. After several bus refusals, the villagers, led by Karnan, smashed a bus that refused to carry a pregnant woman in front of them. This move caused a lot of controversy at the villagers' meeting, but in the end the village chief decided that the whole village would jointly protect Karnan and others who stood up for the interests of the villagers and negotiate with the police. After the bus was smashed, the owner of the bus transportation company and a group of police came to Podiyankulam to question the crime. Under pressure from other villagers, the village chief was forced to reveal the hiding place of Karnan and others. But considering commercial interests, the bus owner decided to withdraw the lawsuit and no longer pursue responsibility. But a police chief named Kannabiran was angered by the villagers' humble attitude when performing this task - the son of a farmer is also worthy of being called "emperor"? He secretly decided to teach Karnan a lesson. Later, the police summoned the villagers who made trouble to the police station for questioning. In order to protect Karnan, several elderly people in the village volunteered to go to the police station to report and sign. But Kannabiran beat all the elders with sticks, seriously injured them and left them on the rooftop of the police station to die in the sun. Karnan and others who had been waiting outside the police station for a day and a night saw that the situation was not right, rushed into the police station to rescue his grandfather and several other elders, and smashed the police station to pieces. After being humiliated again, Chief Inspector Kannabiran called in more police forces to destroy the village, and the villagers realized that the police did not beat them because the bus was damaged, but because they, as low-caste farmers, stood tall when the police questioned them. The whole village decided to fight back under the leadership of Karnan. The police arrived as scheduled, but at this moment Karnan had already set off to perform his duties under the persuasion of the whole village because he had received an acceptance letter for a military position. After breaking through the villagers' resistance, the police entered every villager's house to smash and loot. In order to protect the village woman who was giving birth in the house, Karnan's grandfather set himself on fire and rushed into the violent police. Not far away, Karnan rode up with a sword on his back. He used the sword as a weapon to chop down several policemen and locked Kannabiran in a house as a prisoner. After being captured, the police chief Kannabiran continued to insult Karnan and threatened him that if the other party dared to touch him, the whole village would be razed to the ground.
