Sean (Shia LaBeouf) and Martha (Vanessa Kirby) are looking forward to the birth of their love child. According to Martha's request, they decided to invite a midwife to their home for home delivery. However, when Martha began the delivery process, the midwife she originally chose was unable to come due to something, and was replaced by another midwife named Ava (Molly Parker) to deliver the baby. Tragedy happened, and Martha's child died of suffocation just a few minutes after birth. When the hammer of fate hits, people can only choose to grit their teeth and bear it silently. In order to seek justice for their dead children, Martha's mother found lawyer Suzanne (Sarah Snook) and took Ava to court. While facing her own broken heart, Martha also has to deal with her relationship with Sean, which is on the verge of collapse. The relentless pressure from her extremely controlling mother takes away the last breath of air that Martha can breathe.
