It is the late Edo period. The Akashi clan's Edo family elder Mamiya Tomo (Uchino Seiyo) commits suicide in front of the house of the shogun's elder councilor Doi Daichito (Hira Mikijiro), which shocks the court and the public. Everything started with Akashi clan lord Saisho (Inagaki Goro). Saisho is the half-brother of the current general. He is bloodthirsty and tyrannical, which has caused dissatisfaction among many people in the court. However, Saisho has been designated as the next elder councilor. In order to prevent the people from being harmed by him, Doi instructs Shimada Shinsakuemon (Yakusho Hiroji) to assassinate Saisho on his way back to the clan. Shinzaemon summoned 13 assassins including Kuranaga Saheta (played by Hiroki Matsukata), Mihashi Gunjiro (played by Kazuki Sawamura), Hirayama Kyujuro (played by Tsuyoshi Ihara), etc., and set up ambushes in the places where Saizho had to pass... This film is a remake of Kudo Eiichi's 1963 classic masterpiece of the same name. The new version of the script was written by Daisuke Amano, the son of the famous director Shohei Imamura. The film won the 4th place in the 2010 Japan Film Junpo Top Ten Films.
