The story describes a billionaire Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) who opened a video store and his soap opera star wife Moira (Catherine O'Hara), hippie son David (Daniel Levy), and socialite daughter Alexis (Annie Murphy) went bankrupt overnight. The family had to leave the luxurious life they were accustomed to and return to the countryside to "start from scratch." Fortunately, they still have a little private territory: they bought a nearly uninhabited town in the most remote corner with a playful attitude (the town name is the title of this play "Schmidt Bay"), and now it has become their only remaining place. They must adapt to the new poor life as soon as possible and find the true meaning of family... But this remote place makes them feel too "restricted"!
