In the early 20th century, Vinayak lived on the outskirts of a small village called Tumbbad in India. He was the disowned illegitimate son of the village chief and was obsessed with a mythical ancestral treasure. His great-grandmother was a witch cursed to sleep for a thousand years, and Vinayak believed that the secret of the treasure lay in her. After a confrontation with his great-grandmother, Vinayak finally came face to face with the guardian of the treasure, an evil fallen god. The initial few gold coins quickly escalated into a reckless, centuries-long, everlasting desire that, if Vinayak got his way, would become a curse that would continue to the next generation.
