The sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep, is scheduled to be released in North America on January 24, 2020. It is still based on Stephen King's novel of the same name and directed by Mike Flanagan (Gerold's Game, Death Divination 2, Before I Wake Up). The film focuses on Danny Torrance, the son of The Shining. After experiencing a terrible childhood in the Overlook Hotel, he has been wandering for decades, eager to get rid of his father's despair, alcohol, violence and other traits, and finally settled in a small town in New Hampshire, a supportive AA community. He found a job in a nursing home, where his remaining "Shining" power provided vital final comfort for the dying. With the help of a cat with predictive abilities, he became a "sleep doctor." In 2001, baby girl Abra Stone was born. She gradually began to show supernatural powers and seemed to predict the 9/11 incident. She slowly and unintentionally develops a telepathic bond with Danny, and as she grows in power and becomes more powerful than Danny's, Danny is reawakened to his inner demons and summoned to fight for Abra's soul and survival. Flanagan rewrote the script, which was previously adapted by Akiva Goldsman.
