In 1992, years of tribal wars left the East African country of Somalia in ruins, and the people were living in poverty. The resulting famine caused the deaths of 300,000 people. The dictator Mohammed Farah Aidid, who controlled the capital Mogadishu, robbed relief supplies from international organizations, which aroused public outrage.
