The film is based on the debut novel Five Point Someone by the bestselling Indian author Chetan Bhagat. Faran (Madhavan), Radu (Sharman Joshi) and Rancho (Aamir Khan) are students at the Royal College of Engineering. They live in the same room and become friends. In the academy known for its strictness, Rancho is a very different student. He does not memorize by rote, and even openly contradicts the principal "Virus" (Boman Irani), questioning his teaching methods. He not only encourages Faran and Radu to bravely pursue their ideals, but also persuades the principal's second daughter, Biya (Kareena Kapoor), to leave her fiancé who is full of money.
