Hisagi Shoichiro (played by Hiroji Yakusho) is a senior editor of a publishing house. His wife, Hisagi Fumie (played by Tomoko Hoshino), designs ceramics. Their adult daughter works in a hospital and rarely goes home. Shoichiro feels that family life is boring, and the couple is always polite to each other. Shoichiro has a lover, an amateur calligraphy teacher, Rinko Matsubara (played by Hitomi Kuroki). Rinko has an elegant temperament and is an intelligent woman.
