Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman), a British noble lady, travels alone across the ocean to persuade her husband to sell the ranch and return to England. In Darwin, a port city in northern Australia, Sarah meets a cattle herder named Zhuo (Hugh Jackman). Zhuo drives Sarah on a long journey to the ranch, only to see the body of Sarah's recently deceased husband. The grief-stricken Sarah wanted to sell the ranch quickly, but she had a falling out with the local farm manager Neil Fletcher (David Wenham) in order to protect the Aboriginal child Nora (Brandon Walters) she had just met. Fifteen hundred bulls were to be rushed to Darwin Port for shipment, so Sarah had to ask Zhuo for help. The cattle herding trip made Sarah and Zhuo fall in love in Australia. Soon after the marriage, the two of them became close friends. Zhuo's wandering personality made him leave Sarah to continue herding cattle. Nora, who was supposed to be an Australian Aboriginal adult rite of passage, was captured and taken to Priest Island with other mixed-race children. Her grandfather "King George" (David Gulpilil) was also imprisoned. At the same time, World War II broke out, the Japanese bombed Darwin Port, and the country was broken. Can Sarah's family crisis be resolved? This film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
