The story takes place in the United States in the 1960s. Levien (Oscar Isaac) is an unknown folk singer. He is homeless and has no fixed job. He has to rely on the help of friends every night to find a place to stay. However, despite the dilemma, the stubborn Levien is unwilling to make helpless changes to suit the public's preferences. Because of this, the relationship between him and his long-time friends Jane (Carey Mulligan) and Jim (Justin Timberlake) has also fallen to the freezing point. What makes Levien even more upset is that Jane is pregnant with her own child. After that, Levien went to Chicago to try to find a job, but was rejected after the interview. After that, he returned to Greenwich Village with nothing and continued to work in the tavern where he used to work part-time.
