Introduction

Tourism is booming in the Alps. After dying in an accident, Karin returns as a member of the undead. In a movie theater owned by a Nazi widow, she mourns the past and brings the dead back to life. In her 666-page ghost novel, Children of the Dead, Elfriede Jelinek allows the dead to rise again – even those with swastikas and yellow stars, who are usually happy to be forgotten. Could Jelinek's subject matter be adapted to film, not to mention her way with words? The directorial duo from the Nature Theater of Oklahoma were unafraid to try, aware that the idea might not work. Using amateur actors and Super 8 film in an original Styrian setting, they performed a transposition, to borrow a musical term: from text to silent film, complete with brass-band music. Or rather, a "dark horse" film, a home-movie horror in which the vulgar and the ridiculous survive intact. The viewer is immersed in the universe of the text – while also being somewhere else. The parade of zombies in the supermarket calls to mind the type of films that Jelinek herself cites as inspiration, only lending more credence to the idea that this fusion of text, performance, and film is a brilliant one.
