Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough), a girl who dreams of becoming a singer, comes to Los Angeles, but her money is stolen by a thief while walking on the street. Drew Boley (Diego Boneta), a boy she met by chance, lends her a hand and takes her to the bar where he works as a waitress. The bar's owner Dennis Dupree (Alec Baldwin) and assistant Lonny Barnett (Russell Brand) are worried about the bar's financial crisis, so they decide to invite rock star Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) to perform. Sherrie and Drew are attracted to each other and fall in love. During a performance at the bar, due to the accidental absence of a certain band, Drew and his band Wolfgang Von Colt were able to perform on stage, winning praise and gradually becoming a well-known band. Because of Sherrie's fanatical worship of Stacy, Drew had a misunderstanding and the two had to break up. On the other hand, the wife of the mayor of Los Angeles (Catherine Zeta-Jones) spread the word that rock music is seductive and immoral, and tried her best to close down Dennis' bar. Rock music encountered a crisis in Los Angeles... This film is adapted from the musical of the same name.
