Robert Lebeck’s world-famous photographs of Romy Schneider capture her contradictory nature, her passion, her melancholy and her pain. Lebeck also took the photographs that documented the legendary interview that Romy Schneider allowed Michael Jürgs of the magazine Stern to conduct in Quiberon in 1981 (despite her previous bad encounters with the German press). Schneider had retired to the Brittany spa town to recuperate, accompanied by her long-time close friend Hilde. This interview and the resulting black-and-white photographs formed the basis for the film, which captures the special atmosphere of the three days of the interview, in which Schneider opened up completely – to the point of breaking down. The dynamics between the four people become more interesting as Schneider reveals herself more and more, bringing more and more of the people behind the star to the fore. Schneider sets out to dismantle the cynical journalist’s reserve with her own disarming sincerity, while Hilde desperately tries to protect Schneider from her own candor. In this series of photographs, Lebeck rediscovers the many facets of Schneider, capturing her in all her facets as a fascinating actress and a woman who gives her all but believes she is never truly understood.
