Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) has a mysterious ability to communicate with ghosts, and ghosts often come to her for help. Ghosts come to the world of the living, mostly because of unfulfilled wishes, which prevent them from getting life again, and Melinda shuttles between life and death, while helping them, exploring the true meaning of life and death. In addition to her husband Jim (David Conrad), Melinda's partner in the antique shop Delia (Camryn Manheim) knows the truth. Rick (Jay Mohr), a professor of humanities and history at the university who likes to study supernatural phenomena, can't see ghosts, but can hear their voices. Because of this, he often helps Melinda explain many of the hints she sees from the ghosts.
