In 872 AD, the kingdom of Wessex, ruled by King Alfred the Great, remains standing after the fragmented English Empire was ravaged by invading Vikings. In this time of chaos, the young warrior Uhtred rises to legendary status. His parents, both Saxon nobles, are killed by Vikings, and he is kidnapped by marauders and raised as their own.
