In the 4th century AD, the Roman Empire was declining. In Alexandria, the polytheistic wise man Hypatia (Rachel Weisz) taught her students. Oristis (Oscar Isaac) frequently expressed his love to her and even made a bold confession in the theater; the slave Davus (Max Minghella) also had a good impression of her, but he could not speak because of his humble status. At the same time, the freedom advocated by Christians made Davus's faith begin to waver. This move caused him to be whipped. It was Hypatia who healed his wounds and soothed his soul. The situation was turbulent, and riots broke out under the instigation of polytheism. Christianity took the upper hand and the two sides confronted each other in the Library of Alexandria. Later, the Roman ruler ordered the polytheists to withdraw from the library and allow Christians to enter, and a cruel catastrophe began... This film was screened out of competition at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. It was shot at Fort Ricasouri in Malta, which was the filming location for Gladiator and Troy. Nicole Kidman was originally scheduled to play Hypatia, but she was disliked by Christians for playing a villain in The Golden Compass, so she was replaced.
