Introduction

In a village in Russia during the Tsarist autocracy, farmer Tevye (Topol) lived with his wife and daughter in a Jewish settlement of Ukrainian ethnicity. Although he often endured discrimination from non-Jewish residents, he always adhered to traditional life. A poor Russian youth, Fedka, came to the village. Tevye appreciated his talent and hired him as a tutor. Gradually, various things that challenged his traditional philosophy appeared. He wanted to marry his eldest daughter, Tra, to a rich butcher, but Tra fell in love with the poor tailor, Mert. The two lovers were determined to be together, and Tevye had to compromise and accept their marriage. The second daughter, Eve, fell in love with the tutor, Fedka. Tevye categorically opposed the love between two people of different beliefs, and broke off relations with his daughter for this. When he and the villagers were driven out of the village by the Tsar, they were ready to take refuge with their uncle's family living in New York. They met their daughter Eve and her husband who were also on the run. In their sincere begging, Tevye gave up the traditional philosophy he followed and forgave his daughter's extraordinary behavior. For him, leaving here means abandoning tradition and starting a new life. The film won the 44th Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Original Score.
